Federal and State Student Aid Application Process
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the starting point for receiving federal student aid. The FAFSA is FREE, so you should never be charged to complete the application! Most colleges require a completed FAFSA to develop financial aid packages and to offer scholarships.
Step 1- You must have an FSA ID to complete your FAFSA. You can apply for one at https://fsaid.ed.gov. Your FSA ID allows you to electronically sign when you submit your FAFSA. Both the student applying AND a parent must apply for an FSA ID.
Step 2- After October 1st, you can fill out your FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Fill out your FAFSA as soon as possible.
***The online FAFSA also allows you to complete your New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application. If you complete your FAFSA and miss the TAP application, then visit https://www.tap.hesc.ny.gov/totw/.
Step 3 - Hopefully you completed the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application at the end of your FAFSA application. If not, then you will have to visit https://www.tap.hesc.ny.gov/totw/ to complete the application.
