ESM Class of 2020 Senior CelebrationsInformation posted & current as of June 5, 2020:
The East Syracuse Minoa Central High School Class of 2020 has had a senior year with amazing accomplishments and has also persevered through times of uncertainty, cancellations and disappointments with resilience. ESM plans to honor this special group of young adults with two senior celebrations.
ESM Central High School Executive Principal, Grenardo Avellino sought feedback via a student and parent survey along with discussions and input that included the Class of 2020 student officers, class advisors, parent volunteers and individual parents to determine their priorities for graduation recognition.
“We wanted to understand what was most important to our seniors and their families. Their priorities helped to shape our plans for their commencement exercises,” said Mr. Avellino.
The decisions regarding commencement are also in keeping with the “Interim Guidance for Graduation Celebrations” issued by the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) as of June 4. This current guidance limits mass gatherings to 10 people.
“In planning for the Class of 2020 high school graduation ceremony, the ESM High School administration, class advisors, and staff have focused on health and safety for all while planning meaningful, memorable moments that our ESM seniors and their family members can cherish,” said ESM Superintendent Dr. Donna DeSiato.
Senior and parent responses to the survey supported a virtual, recorded ceremony accessible for everyone to view and a July or August “on site/in person” ceremony (pending further guidance by the NYS Department of Health).
Students are being individually video recorded with their families present at the high school’s Spartan Stadium in their cap and gown. Graduation speeches from the Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Class President, Executive Principal Avellino, Superintendent Dr. DeSiato and more will also be pre-recorded. The complete ESM Graduation Ceremony, including the video footage of each senior, will then be aired on CNY Central (CW6) on Thursday, June 25, from 6-7:30 p.m. for students and families to view.
ESM is also planning an in-person, outdoor graduation ceremony in July or August pending further guidance from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDoH). This date will be set as soon as guidance is issued.
“ESM Central High School is proud that administrators and senior advisors worked collaboratively to ensure that our celebrations included the voices of our students and their parents/guardians,” Principal Avellino said.
“The Class of 2020 is ready for the next chapter of their lives as they head to college, the military, career or other higher education opportunities. Taking the lessons of their high school experience with them and, in particular, this year’s lessons of patience, adaptability and resilience, we are confident our graduates are prepared for success in the 21st century,” added Dr. DeSiato.
