Board of Education members: The ESM Board of Education is made up of nine members (listed below), each elected by the public to serve a four-year term. Terms are overlapping to ensure continuity of leadership. Board members serve without pay. The Board has authority over local school matters subject only to limitations imposed by state law and regulations of the Commissioner of Education.
Responsibilities Board of Education members work together with a focus on students to accomplish the following:
- Set a shared vision and direction for the district
- Represent community perspectives and respond to local needs
- Establish standards, goals and curriculum to support student success
- Hire and evaluate the Superintendent and approve staff appointments
- Adopt district policies and ensure legal compliance
- Develop the budget, secure funding and align resources to support student achievement
- Provide accountability for student learning outcomes
- Support a positive culture for learning and work
- Build strong partnerships with families and community stakeholders
- Ratify collective bargaining agreements
- Maintain high ethical standards
- Commit to continuous improvement

Running for the Board of Education: Qualifications for those interested in running for the ESM Board of Education include being a district resident for at least one year, a U.S. citizen, a minimum of 18 years of age and able to read and write.
Candidates must collect signatures from eligible voters to appear on the ballot. The number required is based on last year’s voter turnout. Petitions are generally available in late February/early March. Individuals may pick up a petition at the ESM Business Office, 407 Fremont Rd., East Syracuse from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Petitions must generally be filed with the district clerk in the ESM Business Office at least 30 days before the election on the third Tuesday in May.
