Clubs and Activities

Air Force Cyber Security Competition

Accounting Club
Mrs. Mock
The ESM Accounting Club promotes the positive role of the accounting profession and strives to provide networking opportunities with potential employers and other students with similar career objectives. The club sponsors guest speakers from public accounting and industry and plans field trips to experience the world of accounting beyond the classroom. Club members provide community service through our Community Tax Preparation Assistance program, in partnership with CORE Federal Credit Union and Peace, Inc.

Art Club

Art Club members gain an enhanced appreciation for artists and different styles of art through museum tours.  Trips have been to major museums in New York City, Boston, Washington and Philadelphia.  Art Club students are also involved in school beautification projects each year, fundraising events and The Memory Project, a service project that involves drawing portraits of orphaned children around the world.

Athletic Strength Club

Our goal is to promote wellness, improve athletic performance, and to provide an opportunity for a healthy lifestyle for all ESM students.  We work with boys and girls, athletes and non-athletes, and students in grades 9-12.  The High School Weight Room is open before school from 7:30-8:30 AM and after school until 6 PM.

Book Club

Book club members meet twice a month after school to discuss a variety of books and authors.  We focus our book selections on authors who will participate at the Greater Rochester Teen Book Festival at Nazareth College in May.  Members of the book club are eligible to join us on our 4th annual field trip to the festival on May 16th where they have the opportunity to meet many of the authors we have read throughout the year.

Carpentry Club

Students who are enrolled in Carpentry class are automatically part of Carpentry Club.  In Carpentry Club, students learn and practice useful carpentry skills by building projects not always practiced on the jobsite. 

Chemistry Club

The Chemistry Club is affiliated with the American Chemical Society. Group members meet virtually through email and attend numerous events throughout the year, many of which are community-based. Students clean up our Adopt-a-Highway area and help in the Otisco Lake cleanup effort as well. We put on demonstrations for community members at Spooktacular and at Golisano Children's Hospital, and participate in poem contests through Earth Day celebrations. Another important facet of this group is its connection to the larger Central New York chemistry community, as we attend local ACS meetings as well as academic lectures at local universities.

Clay Club

The Clay Club is comprised of Clay 2 and Advanced Clay students. Their mission is to support and enhance the experience of ceramics to their immediate community. Clay club students compete annually in the CNY Scholastic Arts and CNY Feats of Clay.

Cosmetology Club

Cosmetology student activities include stage make-up for musicals and plays, community service for local nursing homes and Girl Scout troops. Field trips to trade shows keep students current on today's styles and products. The goal is to help people feel good about themselves.

Covey Training

Student training opportunities will focus on the work of Stephen Covey and his son, Sean Covey, who have contributed worldwide to the field of principle-centered effective leadership.  Your child will be introduced to what is known as the 7 Habits of Effectiveness.  We will utilize the book authored by Sean Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, video clips, activities, and group processing to teach and reinforce the powerful messages within each habit. Creating a personal vision, goal setting, relationship skills, decision making and healthy self-care are just some of the topics we will explore.

DECA

ESM DECA is a student-centered organization.  In DECA we become leaders since we all work towards a common goal, to learn about business and in the process we develop skills needed for our future.  We travel, compete, and make connections with students and business professionals from the local community and all over the world.  It’s also a DECA family…a home away from home.

Engineering Club

The engineering club gives students the opportunity to learn about different fields of engineering.  Its focus is to have students working together to design, build and present solutions to engineering challenges.  The members will compete in a variety of engineering competitions in the area.

ESM Day

ESM Day is an opportunity for the entire student body to participate in a fun-filled day.  Activities have included: inflatables, hypnotists, battle of the bands, Spartan Feud, air brush tattoos, art designs, outdoor games & competitions, food, yearbooks, and more!  Student participation is welcomed in the planning of this annual event!

Festival of Nations
World Language Dept.
This organization assists in the planning and execution of the Festival of Nations event held every other year. The goal of the Festival is to celebrate the diverse backgrounds of the families and staff that make up our ESM community.

Foreign Language Honor Society

This organization is open to those students who have completed at least 2 years of a Foreign Language and have shown outstanding success in Foreign Language and their overall academics.  These students also show a strong commitment to SPARTAN PRIDE and leadership here at ESM.  The goals of this student run organization are to stimulate interest in the study of Foreign Language, to recognize scholarship and promote high standards in Foreign Language, to promote an understanding and appreciation of Foreign Language and culture, and to foster a global community relationship through leadership and service.  FLHS meets monthly to work on local and international service projects.  Inductions are in October. 

Frontiers of Science

Frontiers of Science is a monthly meeting of science students from throughout the central NY area to explore topics in various fields of science in a collegiate setting. Students get to use Syracuse University science labs to dissect cow eyes, explore superconductivity, and create their own food science experiments, among many other interesting programs. Each meeting is led by a different expert scientist in their own field. This program is open to a select few students who are willing to commit to one Saturday morning a month for this unique opportunity.

Game Design

Get into the game! Our game design class will introduce students to the basics of game design and learn why it's become a billion dollar industry in the past 20 years! Students will create and test their own games, discover game career opportunities, and collaborate with team members on a daily basis. No prior experience or prior programming experience is necessary.

Prism formerly GSA

The Gay Straight Alliance is a student-run club which provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, and talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.  There is a social justice component to help end homophobia and transphobia.  We are a very inclusive and confidential organization.  All are welcome!

Gymnastics – Varsity Girls’ Team

Join the gymnastics team and you will leap, tumble, and swing your way to new competitive heights!  We pride ourselves on offering an excellent competitive experience for beginners and experienced gymnasts.  Athletes work at their own ability level, allowing for a safe and rewarding competitive environment.   ESM competes within the Section III Girls Gymnastics League.

Italian Club

Are you interested in a different country, culture, and language? Opportunities to experience and celebrate Italian culture outside the classroom with trips, parades, festivals, Italian opera, art exhibits, food, celebrations and other social activities are the focus of this club.

Key Club

Are you interested in community service and leadership opportunities?  Key Club is affiliated with Kiwanis Club International.  The Key Club participates in school and community related service projects and fundraisers.  At times we meet with other area high school Key Clubs at Divisional Conferences.

Latin Club

Do you like Percy Jackson? How about learning about other cultures? What about games? Then Latin club might be for you! In Latin Club, the students meet after school to enrich their Latin studies by learning more about Ancient Roman and Greek cultures. We play games, do Scavenger Hunts, and make videos about famous myths. You do not have to be a Latin student to participate. 

Marching Band

The Spartan Marching Band is comprised of some of ESM High School’s most talented musicians, dancers and performers.  They are 7-time New York State Champions and have won many awards from across the Eastern United States. Rehearsals are held Tuesday & Thursday evenings from early July through late October, travel out of state during Columbus Weekend and end their season at the New York State Field Band Conference Championships in the Dome.

Masterminds

Masterminds is an academic competition for high school students.  It is fun for students and adults.  It is an activity than is educational and intellectual.  It provides students with a meaningful opportunity to represent their school in an interscholastic setting.

Math League

Math League is a club that gets together for good food, friends and math!  We get together 5 times a year to compete against other schools. Our first two meets are with other schools, the next two are just us, and then we get together with every school in the county to compete. You will complete team questions, individual questions, and relay questions. The top 30 students in the county then get to travel on to the State Math League competition which will be in Long Island in 2015.

Mock Trial Team

The ESM Mock Trial Team competes against other area high schools in a state-wide competition sponsored by the New York State Bar Association.  All materials are provided by the Bar Association. Students act as witnesses and serve as attorneys. No prior experience is necessary. This club is a MUST if you are interested in law or criminal justice, enjoy acting or role playing, or are interested in public speaking, persuasive writing or debate. Many of our team alumni have gone on to have prestigious careers in science, law, business and more!   Coincidence? We on the mock trial team think not!

Model United Nations

Love History? Love to argue?  Model United Nations is a club geared toward solving worldwide problems through a variety of cultural perspectives. This club attends conferences throughout the year representing different countries in an attempt to solve current world wide issue. It allows students to see other country's perspectives as well as learn Harvard style debate.

National Honor Society

Description:  National Honor Society provides an opportunity to recognize and foster the traits of scholarship, character, service, and leadership in students who qualify and apply for membership.  NHS hosts the winter Cotillion and the spring and fall blood drives at the high school.  Qualifying students are selected in the spring of each year based upon overall average and teacher recommendations.  Students must have a 90% overall average, complete at least 20 community service hours each year, and attend monthly NHS meetings in order to maintain membership.

National Technical Honor Society

National Technical Honor Society is an honor society dedicated to recognizing excellence in career and technical education.  The goal of NTHS is to see that deserving technical students be recognized and that people of the community become aware of the talents and abilities of the young people who choose technical education pathways to a successful future.

NYS Business & Marketing

The Business and Marketing Honor Society of New York State recognizes those students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in a secondary business/marketing program. Students must exhibit character, leadership, service, and maintain an 88 business/marketing GPA.

New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA)

Each spring, music students have the opportunity to prepare a solo or small ensemble for evaluation at the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) spring evaluation festival.  Students prepare pieces selected from the NYSSMA Manual with the help of their teacher and perform them at the festival in front of a NYSSMA adjudicator for comments and a score.

Outdoor Adventure Klub (O.A.K.)

Get outside! Learn about the environment and the many ecosystems at work through participation in outdoor activities such as overnight camping, hiking, canoeing and kayaking, white water rafting, horseback riding, rock wall climbing, and more.  Previous highlights include week long excursions to Key West, fly-tying, Adirondack retreats, Boston Whale watching, overnights to Highland Forest, and more. We enjoy outdoor fun while learning about the ecology of the area we are experiencing.  Environmental stewardship, responsibility, and sustainability are central values for this organization.  OAK is a great opportunity to have fun with friends and enjoy the great outdoors.

Physical Education Adventure Klub (P.E.A.K.)

Do you wish you could spend more time in Physical Education class?  Would you like to be involved in horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, cross country skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, and more?  Come join the PEAK club.  The PEAK club provides a wide variety of outdoor recreation experiences to students, that helps improve their quality of life.  The PEAK club develops and coordinates outdoor opportunities that are challenging, active and meaningful.  The PEAK club helps individuals achieve a meaningful relationship with nature and with each other through active outdoor pursuits.  We also conduct activities with the least impact on the natural environment. The PEAK club includes all interested participants, regardless of ability level.

Promoters of Animal Welfare and Safety (P.A.W.S.)

If you have a pet or love animals, then this is the club for you!! We are a volunteer and service club at the high school that was started so students could volunteer in their free time to work with animals, for animals, and for organizations that support and promote animal welfare and safety.  Students volunteer at local shelters, collect supplies needed by those same shelters, and write letters to politicians seeking their support in strengthening animal cruelty laws in NYS.

Science Olympiad

Using the principles of all sciences, students compete in Science Olympiad events. The goal is to use the knowledge and expertise learned in classes in order to win events and continue along to compete in the Regional Tournament.

Show Choir

ESM's Show Choir is the premiere vocal performance group of the high school. The group sings Broadway, jazz and pop music while incorporating staging. Singers who want to improve their musicianship, vocal quality, and acting abilities are encouraged!

ESM Ski Club

Held for 6 consecutive weeks starting the first week of January each year.  We ski/snowboard at Labrador Mountain on Wednesdays immediately after 4th block.  Our goal is to inspire fun, fitness, sportsmanship and personal achievement during our beautifully snowy winters in Central New York.  All levels welcome!!  Lessons included with the cost of the pass.

Spartan Designers

The mission of the Spartan Designers is to promote design awareness and enhance the understanding of design as a creative process.  This is a student organized organization that encourages all students from different areas to explore the many disciplines of design and to use their experiences to come together.  This school organization will establish an educational setting that will examine the principles of design, elements of design, the nature of materials, the industrial process, and human factors.     

Spartan Express Club (News magazine)

Spartan Express Club is an organization dedicated to reviewing, critiquing, and producing our high school news magazine.  Students in the club may be enrolled in Journalism, a for-credit English course, or they may be volunteers who want to be involved in journalism. In other words, any student who is interested in Journalism may be a member of Spartan Express Club.  We meet in a computer lab after school on Tuesdays.

Spartan Garage Auto Tech Club

Interested in cars and building things?  Are you good with your problem solving skills and figuring out how things work?  Help us complete the restoration or build of a classic car.  Each year, students are charged with the task of choosing a vehicle of interest to build and/or restore.  When done, the completed vehicle is put on display at numerous car shows and events to sell raffle tickets.  In July, the winning ticket is drawn and the car finds its new owner.  The proceeds from the raffle are used to purchase the next build.  Students interested in this club do not necessarily have to be enrolled in the Automotive Technology program.  All students, grades 9-12 are welcome to participate.  A few of the cars that we have built/restored include : ’65 Shelby Cobra, ’33 Hot Rod, ’68 Camaro, ’55 Chevy Pickup, ’69 Firebird and a ’72 Chevelle.

Spartan Junior Honor Society

Spartan Junior Honor Society is a club to acknowledge high academic achievement in freshmen, create an opportunity to make a connection to the high school, and to provide a model program of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, and character.   Spartan Junior Honor Society membership is a privilege as well as a pledge to be of good character, to strive for academic excellence, and to serve the community.

Spartan Manufacturing

Students who are enrolled in Production Systems are automatically part of Spartan Manufacturing Club.  In this club, students learn and practice woodworking skills by building small pieces of furniture or other small-scale woodworking projects.

Spartan Media

Students in Spartan Media serve the school by deejaying dances, videotaping performances, and running a film festival. Members also organize free trips to watch movies at Regal. To be an active member you need to attend 80% of the meetings and work two outside events. 

Spartan Pride

Spartan PRIDE is the high school vision for PBIS, a national program that is now being run at every school in our district.  PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.  Spartan PRIDE stands for Professionalism – Respect – Involvement – Diversity - Excellence.

Do you love to act, sing, or dance? Perhaps you are interested in set construction, scenic painting, lighting, sound, costuming or other behind-the-scenes roles in theatre? The ESM Drama Club is open to all students and offers you the chance to do these things and much more. We produce two high-quality theatrical productions each year (one play and one musical), and offer many exciting theatre-related opportunities throughout the school year, including creating a themed “haunted house” for the annual “Spooktacular” event and a trip to New York City in the spring to see a Broadway show.

Sports Management

The Sport Management Club at ESM provides students with unique opportunities to plan, organize, implement and evaluate sports-related events and gain additional valuable industry experience with their peers while learning and having fun.  The goal of our organization is to provide learning and community service opportunities to all ESM Sports Management students to enhance their sport industry experience and allow them to serve the local community.  The Sport Management Club has planned events with the Syracuse Crunch and the Syracuse Silver Knights.  This year, the club sponsored a guest speaker who currently works with the Indianapolis Colts and the University of Indiana Football Program.

Stage Band

Stage Band musicians have the opportunity to learn about and appreciate jazz music. Generally, the band consists of the rhythm section, trumpet, trombone and saxophone players.

Stage Crew

Students have the opportunity to learn the trade of theatre lighting and sound through hands-on training. Stage Crew members work concerts, theatre productions, and special school events in the High School Auditorium.

Student Council

Have you ever considered becoming a student leader?  Or wondered where to put your leadership skills to use?  Take the risk and become a student council or class officer.  We are a collaboration of elected and selected students who make decisions which represent our students’ voices.  We work to build school community through various events and service projects.  Elections are held for officer positions; however, anyone can get involved at any point in our various events and projects.  Join today!

Student Forum

Student Forum meets once a marking period for 80 minutes. The meeting provides a forum for elected and selected student leaders to share ideas, information, concerns, and solutions regarding school and community related issues.  Students participate in leadership training activities within the structure of the agenda for each meeting.  Students are nominated by staff to participate, however, if students are interested, we encourage you to voice your interest and get involved.

Winter Guard

The ESM Winter Guard is an extension of the Spartan Marching Band that provides a competitive outlet for students to further acquire and perfect spinning and moving skills.  Rehearsals are held Tuesday & Thursday evenings from early November through late March, and will end their 2015 season at the Mid-York Color Guard Circuit Championships at ESM High School.  The ESM Winter Guard is the 2014 Mid-York Color Guard Circuit SA3 Silver Medalist.
 
Winter Percussion Ensemble

The ESM Winter Percussion Ensemble is an extension of the Spartan Marching Band that provides a competitive outlet for students to further acquire and perfect percussion and moving skills.  Rehearsals are held Tuesday & Thursday evenings from early November through early April, and will end their 2015 season at the New York State Percussion Circuit Championships in the SCR Arena on the OCC Campus.

If you like the reasons, then Yearbook is the organization for you! We have classes during 4th block and work as a club after school. Our goal is to create an exciting book. 

Youth against Cancer

Have you, a friend, or a family member been affected by cancer? Be part of a club that promotes awareness, volunteerism, and support for the efforts of the American Cancer Society. Some of our club activities have included attending the Making Strides Walk in Clinton Square, baking cookies for a local cancer clinic, and selling flowers to raise money for the ACS. Our goal is to provide opportunities for students to make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer through teamwork, community building, and acts of goodwill.

Youth, Development, & Leadership (YDL)

YDL (Youth Development and Leadership) is a student run, adult supported club for students in grades 4-12 that is focused on leadership development. Students work together to design and carry forth a community service project that will benefit senior citizens who live in the ESM School District.  Through their involvement, students gain skills and competence in the areas of collaboration, communication, decision making and responsibility.
