Background: Developing a process for a District brand identity was a Key Initiative under the District's Strategic Plan.

During the 2008-2009 school year the Communications Action Team, working in conjunction with consultants from a company called Strategic Communications, researched design elements and conducted public forums for students, staff and the community-at-large to advise the District regarding the brand identity. This collaborative inclusive process is reflected in our new brand identity.


The ESM Board of Education approved a brand identity at its September 28 meeting. This Key Initiative is one component of the long-term Strategic Intents to ensure the ESM community is well informed about District programs, results and future directions.

The Design: We wanted to develop a brand identity that represents:
1) the District's tradition of being a student-centered organization;
2) 21st Century learning, which is driving our Strategic Plan; and
3) the future direction of the District in pursuing our vision,"The East Syracuse-Minoa Central School District will be an exemplary 21st Century learning community whose graduates are prepared to excel in a complex, interconnected, changing world."

The ESM official school colors reinforce school spirit. The typeface is professional, yet simple, to suggest that our District has been built on a strong foundation as an integral part of the community. You will note there is no hyphen in the abbreviation "ESM" or in the words "East Syracuse Minoa" representing one unified District.

An accurate depiction of the globe, including continents from both the western and eastern hemispheres, conveys preparing students for living and learning in our global society. The figure demonstrates active engagement with the world. Finally, the "swoosh" gives the entire picture a sense of energy and action, connecting our students to the world and their future.

Mascots: The brand identity will not replace our mascots like the ESM Spartan, Fremont Knight, ESE Cheetah, Minoa Dragon or Woodland Deer.

Trademark: The District is trademarking the new brand identity.
