The ESM Strategic Plan for 2013-2018 is our blueprint for achieving our vision of being "an exemplary 21st Century learning community whose graduates are prepared to excel in a complex, interconnected, changing world". It provides the structure to spark our innovative thinking, and plan, guide and align our problem solving and decision-making. The priorities identified in our Strategic Plan guide our work at the district, building, department and individual level, including the alignment of our time, resources and energy to support our identified priorities. It translates our intentions into action steps for continuous improvement.
Our plan for 2013-2018 builds upon the strong foundation of our 2008-2013 plan, which established a clear vision for our staff, students and community. It includes a set of beliefs, a mission, a vision and "begins with the end in mind" by articulating the attributes of an ESM graduate to meet the rigorous demands of the 21st Century and college/career readiness. The action steps of our plan focus on developing these attributes from our pre-school through graduation. See below for a copy of the 2013-2018 strategic plan and our priorities for the current year.
The 2013-2018 plan has an unrelenting focus on three priority areas:
Our plan was developed and is being implemented with active participation from our students, parents, staff, community members, business leaders and higher education representatives. Adult and student expectations are communicated in each of the three focus areas to build and leverage individual capacity and leadership. Specific indicators of success direct our reflection and celebration on continual progress of our action steps, guide our decisions and next actions.
Connected with our priority on inquiry-based and trans-disciplinary learning for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12, ESM is part of the Empire State STEM Learning Network, a statewide, community-led collaborative with a mission to advance STEM education to prepare all students—regardless of their career goals—for college and career success, to fuel innovation and economic vitality in the Empire State. The Empire State STEM Network is divided into hubs. ESM is in the CNY STEM Hub, which has a vision to design and incubate educational models of excellence empowering all PK-20 students to excel in a rapidly changing world. “STEM education” refers to the interdisciplinary teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, to a level of rigor sufficient to produce critical thinkers and problem solvers across all fields of endeavor who can thrive in the 21st century economy. Click here for a copy of “STEM @ ESM” outlining the District’s involvement in the Network.
