This Is How We Do It!

Welcome to Mrs. Brower's first grade class.   Below you will find a list of policy and procedures for my classroom.

                        http://www.brentanos.fr/pages/clubs/kidsclub/kidsclubUS.htm

  • Your child will be given a blue "take home" folder.  Please be sure to check this each and every night.  They must bring this to school with them everyday.

HOMEWORK:

  • Your child will have homework every night.  The homework will cover material that we have already cover during the week.  The work your child does at home should only take them about 10-15 minutes to complete.  For any reason that it is takiing your child longer than usual to complete, please send it back into school with a note to me.  This will allow me to investigate further.
  • After the first month of school, it is your childs responsibility to make sure they return their homework each day and bring back their blue folder.  Please encourage them to be independent and take responsibility.
  • If a child comes to school without their homework or homework not completed, they will be sent to "homework oasis" to complete the homework.  They would go to the art room once they have taken care of their belongings.  They will be instructed to come back to class just before announcements.  If your child continues to come to school without their homework, they may have to miss playtime or a parent/teacher conference will be scheduled.  I don't give homework to keep students busy.  I give homework to continually reinforce what is being taugt within the classroom and to give extra practice for those who are having difficulty with a particular concept.
  • Your child will also get a "buddy"bag each night.  This is a bag of reading books that have been chosen specifically for your child.  These books are books that will allow your child to practice their reading on their instructional level.  This bag of books must be returned each day unless specified by the teacher.  These books are part of your childs homework.  Please practice these books each night.  You can read to them, they can read to you or you can read together.  Practice is inparative for your child to progress through the reading levels.  If they do not practice it shows and begins to hinder their reading ability.  If you lose any books you will be held responsible to replace the books lost by paying the cost of each book.

BIRTHDAYS:

  •  We love to celebrate birthdays.  However, we do not accept any unhealthy snacks.  Because of our health and wellness policy and program, we are trying to promote heathy snacks.  Some examples are yogurt, granola, fruit, pudding etc.  If you are not sure, let me know and we can determine together if it falls within the school guidlines.
  • When celebrating a birthday, just send in your child's birthday treat.  We will celebrate their birthday at our snack time.

SPECIALS;

  •     I will send a schedule with a list of days and times of each special.  For art, send your child in with an old t-shirt or art smock.  For gym, send your child in with a pair of sneakers.  They can even leave an extra pair of sneaker here at school.  For music, just come ready to sing.  Library, your child will be allowed to take out one book.  They can return it at any time and get another one.  If they want to change their book any other time than on the their library day, they must do it first thing in the morning before announcements.

ABSCENTS:

  •   When your  child is out of school, please call the school and notify them.  When they return to school be sure to send in a note as to why they were absent.  Also remember that when children are out too many times, they tend to fall behind the others becasue they miss so much material.  When determining if they need to miss a day of school, please make sure that it not just sniffles but something more.

FIELD TRIPS;

  •       I will provide a list at the beginning of the school year listing all field trips, the cost and other items your child will need.  Please be considerate and turn in any monies on time.  Many times events have to be paid for in advance and it comes out of the teachers own pocket.  If for any reason you are unable to contribute to your childs trips, please let me know ahead of time so we can make adjustments.
  • Each field trip we have, I will ask  a few parents at a time so everyone gets a chance to attend.  If you are selected to attend a field trip, you will not be able to bring siblings due to insurance reasons.  Thank you for understanding.

VOLUNTEERING;

  •    I can always use an extra pair of hands for special activities throughout the year and during center time everyday.  If you would like to volunteer at anytime, just let me know and we can make arrangements.  If for any reason, your child has difficulty staying on task while you are volunteering, I will have to find other ways for you to help out.  Sometimes it becomes too difficult for the child to have their parent there.

SUPPLY LIST;

  • I will send home a supply list during the summer before the year begins so parents know exactly what their child needs for their first day of first grade.  Below is a list of items that I usually ask for...
    • 10 glue sticks
    • 2 packages of pencils
    • 4 boxes of crayons (16 count)
