Wellness Update: Frequently Asked Questions

Thursday, November 29, 2007

1) Why does the District have a Wellness Policy? Federal and State Regulations require establishing a Board of Education Policy on Wellness in each school district as of July 1, 2006.

2) What areas are included in the Wellness Policy? The three areas of Wellness are:

  • Nutrition Education (Curriculum)
  • Physical Activity
  • Other School-Based Activities and Nutrition Guidelines

3) Why is the school regulating what parents send in for birthday or other celebrations? The Federal and State mandates require the school to establish guidelines for all food available on school campuses. While we do not regulate what parents/guardians send in for their child, we do have a responsibility for establishing guidelines for what is shared with other students. The school district is examining what flexibility should be allowed in this regard.

4) Are there any restrictions on food items that Parents/Guardians send in with their children for lunch? No. Parents/Guardians may send whatever they wish for their child's lunch.

5) Are school staff allowed to check student lunches or advise children what they should or should not eat? School staff have been advised that parents/guardians may send whatever they desire for their child's lunch and they are not to question or advise students about the contents of their lunch.
