Fremont students experienced the joy of Carol Ponder's singing on March 14. Using only her voice and sometimes an autoharp and the guitar, Carol created an intimate atmosphere in the school's gym for her Appalachian ballads. By recreating and singing her Southern Mountain folk songs, Appalachian folk traditions were extended and preserved through our students.
One treat for the students was learning how to make and how to play the "spoons" so they could then accompany the rhythms of their favorite songs.
Each student signed his or her name to a welcoming banner that greeted our artist. After the performance, a Syracuse, teaching artist, Linda Facciponte, worked with 2nd and 4th grade students for two class periods to explore song and movement and to extend the experience gained through our Arts and Education performance.
