Exercise and Eating Relationship

The following illustrations (from Tim Smith, 1988, Youth Strength Training, Athletic Institute: North Palm Beach, FL) will help you to better understand the relationship between eating (calorie intake) and exercise (calorie output) relative to weight control (maintenance, gain or loss).

Weight Maintenance:

Weight is maintained when there are equal calorie intake and expenditure.

Weight Gain:

Weight gain occurs when more calories are ingested than are expended.

Weight Loss:

Weight loss occurs when more calories are expended than ingested.
