Function:
The arm and shoulder muscles are made up of three musclesthe biceps, the triceps, and the deltoids.
The biceps flex the forearm and turn the palm upward. The triceps extend the forearm and the deltoids abduct the arm.
Activities:
Activities that use the arm and shoulder muscles include:
- rowing (biceps)
- throwing (triceps), and
- overhead lifting (deltoids)
Strength Exercises:
Muscles of the arm and should can be strengthened by such exercises as:
- dumbbell curls (biceps),
- push ups (triceps), and
- shoulder presses (deltoids)
Flexibility Exercises:
To stretch the arms and shoulders try the following:
- For the biceps, hang the arm down at your side, palms facing forward; then press the arms back while extending the wrists.
- For the triceps, place the arms in a "curl" position, with the finger tips touching the shoulders; pull the elbows together and elevate them as high as possible.
- For the deltoids, grab one wrist and pull the arm across the front of the body, parallel with the ground.
