This course includes instruction and review of basic writing skills. Primary emphasis is on composition, reviewing and improving students' skills in writing analytical and descriptive essays, and also encouraging the writing of creative stories and poems. Students must develop analysis and editing skills to improve their own work and transfer those skills to the various aspects of short stories, novels, plays and poetry. Designed for a broad range of students, from low to high averages.

This curriculum is taught in an interdisciplinary manner with Global History (Social Studies 9 Honors). A multi-cultural approach integrates the teaching of culture and history with reflective literature of the culture. The emphasis is on thematic discussion and understanding of literature as it relates to Global History. For thematic units are presented: morality, self-awareness, risk, and freedom. Critical thinking skills are also emphasized. Students complete a library unit, a career unit, vocabulary study, projects, oral presentations, research, creative writing and a writing portfolio.

English 10 Honors

This course reinforces the new state standards in all basic skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and test-taking, including preparing for the new Regents Exam. Students will complete a library unit, a career unit, and attend Syracuse Stage performances. Interdisciplinary work with the Social Studies department is part of the curriculum as well.

This course includes reinforcement of the new state standards and all basic skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and test-taking as well as preparation for the new Regents exam and the SAT / ACT exams. The study of literature will concentrate on American authors.
 
English 11 Honors

This course includes reinforcement of the new state standards and all basic skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and test-taking as well as preparation for the new Regents exam and the SAT / ACT exams. The study of literature will concentrate on American authors. Students will also attend Syracuse Stage performances. College Prep English

Prerequisite: Successful completion of English 11 and a 65 or better on the English Regents
This course includes reinforcement of the new state standards and all basic skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and test-taking. The course emphasizes critical reading, writing, and research; it is designed especially for the college-bound student and concentrates on the skills needed for college-level work.
 
Advanced Placement English
Credit: 1 unit

Prerequisite: Verbal SAT score 520+, English Regents score of 85+, writing sample, teacher recommendation; successful completion of English 11
This is a college-level course in literature and composition. Students are required to read and write on an advanced level. All students will take the national Advanced Placement exam in May. This test costs approximately $80 and may earn the students college credit and/or exemption from college courses.
 
Seniors must take two (2) semester English courses from the following choices to meet English 12 requirements. These courses count toward the 12th grade. English requirement only if taken in the senior year.

Public Speaking

This course is a survey of oral communication; it includes reinforcement of the new state standards and all basic skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and test-taking. Students will prepare and deliver various types of speeches. Seniors may use this course for a English credit.
 
Dramatics

Prerequisite: None
This course is an advanced study of dramatic literature. Students will be introduced to the development of characters and stage performance. Other topics included are theatre history, acting techniques and theatrical careers.
 
Creative Writing
Credit: 1/2 unit

Prerequisite: Successful completion of English 10
This course is designed for students who wish to write creatively. Students will read and analyze works in several literary genres, write in a variety of literary forms, enter at least one writing contest and contribute to and produce the school's literary magazine, Words...Words...Words.
 
Journalism 1
Credit: 1/2 unit
Year: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
This course offers practical experience, producing the high school newspaper, the Spartan Express, stressing research, writing and revising. Students will use computers, scanners and digital cameras.
 
Journalism 2
Credit: 1/2 unit
Year: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Journalism 1
This course is a continuation of Journalism 1. Students will assume positions of leadership in the production of the school newspaper.

Theater
Credit: 1 unit

Prerequisite: None
This course introduces students to the basic elements of the theater. Students will learn about all aspects of plays and play production. Topics include the history of theater; play analysis and interpretation; role-playing and backstage activity. This is a participate course requiring student input. Field trips will include attending a play and taking a backstage tour. The final exam will be a performance. Meets graduation requirement for one credit in the arts.

Yearbook
Credit: 1 unit (Pass/Fail Elective)
Year: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
Students in this course are responsible for creating the school's yearbook, in both the planning and production phases of the book. Production areas include layout techniques, writing of copy, keyboarding, photography, proofreading and checking. Layout and design techniques are strongly emphasized. Students are expected to fulfill obligations outside the classroom in order to meet publishing deadlines. Members are also required to attend staff meetings outside the school day. This course credit does not qualify for the English graduation requirement.
