Business & Information Technology Sequences

Business and Information Technology Education is a broad and diverse discipline that enables students to prepare for entry-level employment and/or post-secondary education in business, marketing, and computer occupations. The course sequences in Business and Information Technology are designed to provide a variety of options for students to meet requirements while developing broad based, transferable skills and specialized competencies. Student leadership development programs such as DECA (an association of marketing students) are an integral part of the Business and Information Technology program.


Introduction to Career & Financial Management
Credit: 1/2 unit
Year: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None

This course is an overview of business topics, including the economy; entrepreneurship; management; marketing; advertising; human resources; consumer decision-making and protection; business communications and business behavior. The second half of the course deals with personal perspectives of the work world, addressing students' needs/wants/goals, lifestyle aspirations, career-related finances, banking, income tax, credit, insurances, renting and buying a car and/or home and consumer rights. This is a great class for those interested in a business major, as well as those who would just like to know more about business. Course-work includes projects and hands-on activities.

Digital Communications I*
Credit: ½ unit Year: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None

This course is required for graduation. It is designed to prepare students to incorporate 21st Century skills needed for success in high school as well as post-secondary needs. Industry standard applications, web development tools and communication technologies will be integrated throughout the curriculum. The Teaching Learning Communities component, an addition to the course over the past two years, focuses on social and emotional skills and has proven to be an integral element that has been integrated into the course. Additional units included are goal setting, test and note taking strategies, collaboration and presentation applications, and business and cell phone etiquette. Students in this course will develop skills in the areas of blogging, podcasting, video conference, and using Google documents, Microsoft Office and Movie Maker. Aligning with the district's strategic plan, students will integrate technology skills, into their daily lives and explore a potential career path through a career unit.
This course is a graduation requirement.

Digital Communication II
Credit: ½ unit Year 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite: Digital Communication I

The implementation of Digital Communications II will help increase awareness and provide students with the necessary 21st century technological skills that are currently demanded in the very competitive workforce. Student will gain necessary skills, including critical thinking, collaboration, media literacy, social and cross cultural skills, as well as the ability to work in a technology and media-driven environment with rapid changes in technology. Their preparedness for the ever competitive work environment will help them to be successful in post-secondary education as well as the workforce. The demands of today's lifestyles, workforce and state standards show the need for providing all of our students with financial literacy, career guidance, exploration and awareness to make informed consumer and life decisions. This advanced curriculum will entail real world interaction with industry contacts and job shadows. Students will learn more advance researching skills companies are looking for from students. Aligning with the district's strategic plan, students will walk away with a higher skills set in areas such as written communication skills and digital literacy skills.

SUNY Criminal & Business Law
Credit: 1 unit (SUNY College Credit Option)
Year: 11, 12
Prerequisite: None

This full-year course is encouraged as an elective in a 3-unit sequence. Topics include some criminal law, the individual and the legal environment, contracts, personal and real property, transportation and travel, handling goods and services, agency relationships, negotiable instruments, and Business Ownership. Business Law may be used as the fifth unit for a five-unit Social Studies sequence only if earning a business sequence.

Business Communications
Credit: ½ unit Year: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Digital Communications 1

Experience in Microsoft Word greatly enhances the students' practical computer skills for use in high school, post-secondary education, and the business world. This course also prepares students for the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification, which is a globally recognized certification. Students will gain computer skills while manipulating features in MS Word as well as learn to write business letters, create charts, create links and formatting, manipulate clip art, insert comments, and advanced features in MS Word.
In June 2009, 23 out of 27 students passed the MOS exam (85% passing rate!)

Money & Banking
(Personal Finance Management)
Credit: 1 unit Year: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None

The first half of this course includes an introduction to personal business finance including setting up a financial plan, proper use of credit, budgeting, and consumer protection information. Students in this class are eligible for employment at the Spartan Branch of the CORE Federal Credit Union. The second half of the course introduces students to various investment options including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, and commodities. Students will also participate in two online stock market games

Principles of Accounting I
Credit: 1 Year: 10,11,12
Prerequisite: None

This beginning accounting course is an introduction to accounting – the system of recording and auditing business transactions. Student learn about and understand the accounting cycle and its application to sound accounting practices. The class covers classifying and recording original business transactions, closing entries and completing the accounting cycle, adjusting erroneous entries, compiling accounting data into meaningful financial statements, and discussing the vital role ethics play in the accounting field. This course is a necessary coruse for all ESM Business students, students who will study business in college and for students interested in the accounting field.

Advanced Accounting II – SUNY Credit Option
Credit: 1 unit Year: 11,12
Prerequisite: Principles of Accounting I

This course is a continuation of Principles of Accounting I. Topics covered include Accounting for Merchandizing Operations, Inventory Management, Cash and Internal Controls, Accounting for Receivables, Current Liabilities and Payroll Accounting. Students have the option of earning three SUNY credits through Onondaga Community College BUS 105.

SUPA Accounting – Syracuse University Option
Credit: 1 unit Year:11,12
Prerequisite: None

This course is intended for those students who are able to work with the concepts of Accounting I and II at an accelerated pace. SUPA Accounting is a fully accredited college course that will introduce the students to financial accounting concepts that entrepreneurs, managers, investors and creditors use in planning, operating and analyzing a business. An emphases is placed on the interpretation of financial statements. Students have the option of earning four Syracuse University credits (ACC 151).

Principles of Marketing

This full-year course provides students with the foundation needed for a career in marketing. The contents provide students with a general marketing background, centered on basic marketing functions (buying, selling, research, promotion, management, etc.) Membership in DECA as a co-curricular activity is strongly advised.

Student Activity Accounting 1
Credit: ½ unit Year: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation

This independent study course provides hands-on practical learning in the accounting field for students interested in business and finance. Students assist the school's Central Treasurer. They update and maintain the Student Activity Fund, learn cash control, policy and procedures for safeguarding the student activity funds, record keeping and cash receipts, and disbursements.

Principles of Marketing

This full-year course provides students with the foundation needed for a career in marketing and business fields. The contents provide students with a marketing, foundation and the opportunity to work with our community on real applied projects centered on basic marketing functions (promotion, buying, selling, research, management, etc.). Business Ownership (DECA)
Credit: 1 unit Year: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Principles of Marketing

This is a full-year course designed to provide students with a background in managing business, personal and community service projects. It focuses on the basic marketing functions applicable to the completion of a project and a business plan. Major DECA projects are completed in this class.



 

 






BACK TO TABLEPrinciples of Business Management
Credit: 1 unit Year: 11, 12Prerequisite: Business Ownership, Money and Banking or Retail Management

This course is an introduction to the concepts of management, which includes influencing people to help accomplish the common goals of an organization or business. Emphasis will involve activities that include strategic planning, organizational structure and design, managing decision making, human resources, motivating employee performance, collaborating in groups and teams, successful communication in organizations, and utilizing leadership skills that involve the effective use of a company's diverse resources. Students wishing to continue working on a business plan in Business Ownership. Money and Banking students who would like to work at the Spartan Branch in a supervisory capacity, and students completing Retail Management who would like to continue at the management level are eligible for this course.


Web Design 1
Credit: ½ unit Year: 10,11,12
Prerequisite: Digital Communications I

This is an introductory course in web design covering topics such as layout, graphics, content, and copyright. Students use Dreamweaver (an HTML editor) and are introduced to HTML language. A unit on Adobe Photoshop covers skills used in preparing graphics for the Internet. Students will leave this course with the skills to design a website

Web Design 2
Credit: ½ unit Year: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Web Design I

This intermediate-level course is for students who satisfied the requirements in Web Design I. Students continue to enhance their skills using Dreamweaver. Other areas of focus may include timelines, frames, templates, layers, inserting Flash images, and Java scripts. An introduction to Flash is also included with students learning the basics of the drawing tools and creating animated graphics and text.

Game Design
Credit: ½ unit Year: 10,11, 12
Prerequisite: Digital Communications I and II

Students will gain experience in many aspects of the growing game industry. They will learn to design, develop and market video games. They will also learn the programming skills required to successfully develop a video game. Also included in this class will be a career component where students will search potential career opportunities in the gaming industry.

Spreadsheet Management
Credit: 1/2 Unit
Year: 10, 11,12
Prerequisite: Digitial Communications I & II

This course provides an extensive study of Microsoft Excel's program and its applications. Course of study will include creating, modifying, and managing common worksheets leading to MS Office Specialist (MOS) Certification that is globally recognized (add to your college applications and resume). Students will learn to control and manipulate budgets, create movie and musical favorite listings, administer and graph surveys, develop a budget for your future vacation, and more!Microsoft Excel:

SUNY Contemporary Business Principles
(SUNY OCC College Credit Option)

An introductory course designed to give the student an overview of the impact of business on society.  The course is intended to aid the student in obtaining a clear understanding of the way in which contemporary business functions through the interrelationships of management, marketing and finance. 

Retail Management I

Credit:  ½ unit                          Year 11.12

Prerequisite:  Principles of Marketing or Business Ownership and teacher recommendation


This course provides students with practical work experience where they can develop and apply customer service and related selling skills.  Students learn to manage inventory, complete daily cash handling and sales records, manage marketing aspects including display techniques and placement.  Students must also complete written coursework covering Retail Management foundations and theories.
           

Retail Management II

Credit:  ½ unit                                   Year 11.12

Prerequisite:  Retail Management I and teacher recommendation


This course is a continuation of Retail Management I.  Students assume a management role in running an actual store.  These shift managers are responsible for delegating tasks, inventory management, shift management, product marketing, buying and ordering merchandise, and dealing with employee conflict.  Students prepare business documents such as purchase orders, daily inventory tracking reports, daily and weekly sales reports and cash register reports.

Sports and Entertainment Management

Credit: ½ unit                         Year: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Digital Communications 1


Management, marketing, and other business concepts are taught through the sports and entertainment industry. Students will develop a fundamental knowledge of marketing that relates sports and entertainment industries, and career possibilities available in the industries.  Students will also develop the necessary skills for a career in the sports and entertainment fields.  In addition to marketing overview, this course is designed to show how advertising sales, event marketing, and communications are important.  Students will have the opportunity to earn three (3) college credits through SUNY.

Foundations of Sport and Entertainment Management

SUNY College Credit Option

Prerequisite: Sports and Entertainment Management

Sport and Entertainment Management is focused on the business and governance of sport and management as it applies to organizations in both nonprofit and for-profit sectors.  (A) Basic historical understanding of various dimensions of the sport and entertainment industry in the United States and throughout the world, including important icons and critical events, will be covered.  The modern evolution of the business of sport and entertainment into a compled, multi-billion dollar service and product industry encompassing many different organizational structures will be examined.  Students will learn about careers in the sport and entertainment business industry in areas such as marketing, sports agents, public relations, sales, facility management, information technology, law, media, event management, finance, economics, and athletic management

The Business of Music
Credit: ½ unit                     Year: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
