Concert Choir
Credit: 1 unit
Year: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
This chorus is the group from which all other groups and selective activities are chosen. Concert Choir performs within the district and at civic meetings and events. It rehearses and performs a wide variety of classical and popular vocal literature, which allows students to acquire the skills, habits, and techniques necessary for successful musical performance and achievement. This course fulfills the Music/Art graduation requirement.


Theory 1
Credit: 1 unit
Year: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
Objectives and content:
  • To achieve a workable knowledge of the basic rules and principles of music.
  • To train the ear to recognize sounds individually and in combinations.
  • To improve the ability to read and perform music with sensitivity and accuracy.
  • To learn the fundamentals of arranging and harmonizing.
  • To study keys, clefs, staves, time signatures, rhythmic patterns, terms, chords, melody and other music tools.
This course fulfills the Music/Art graduation requirement.

Theory 2
Credit: 1 unit
Year: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Theory 1 or equivalent knowledge
Students will have the opportunity to expand upon the basic musical knowledge introduced in Theory 1. There will be emphasis on keyboard harmony, ear training, advanced rhythmical training, chord progression and elementary composition arranging. This course fulfills the Music/Art graduation requirement.
 

Concert Band
Credit: 1 unit
Year: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Instrumental lessons
The East Syracuse-Minoa High School Concert Bands are the instrumental ensembles from which all other select instrumental groups are chosen. There are two sections of concert band offered in the high school. Each band performs frequently, both in and out of the school district. The demands for good musicianship, consistency of performance and musical excellence are constant. Students are expected to attend one lesson per week, with grading emphasis on lesson preparedness and contribution to the ensemble during rehearsal and performances. The concert bands perform a wide variety of musical literature, from symphonic transcriptions and concert marches to Broadway and pop tunes. Concert band members should be highly self-motivated and interested in acquiring the necessary skills, techniques and habits needed to become proficient on their instruments. This course fulfills the Music/Art graduation requirement.
